You’re ready to take the next big step —

But the Board you have now is holding you back

Attention all nonprofit Executive Directors and Founders-

Here’s what I know about you: You’ve got BIG plans.
In fact, you’ve got a much bigger vision for your nonprofit than where you are now. You’re ready to step it up a notch.

Maybe you dream of expanding a program. Or eliminating a waiting list. Or adding key staff. Or even starting a capital campaign.

Or maybe you see a way to wipe out a problem — like homelessness, hunger, or animal euthanasia — and completely change your community for good.

There’s just one problem

You’re dragging your Board along.

  • You’re the one recruiting new Board members (because your Board isn’t)
  • You’re the one putting together a strategic plan (because your Board doesn’t know enough about what the organization does to be helpful, so all they say is “whatever you think is fine”
  • You feel alone, like your Board doesn’t know what to do, doesn’t care, and you’re in this all by yourselfThat alone is a one-way ticket to burnout for you. But to make things even worse,

The members of your Board aren’t even giving.

    bigstock-Business-People-With-Question--4966182

So, to top it all off, you have a fundraising problem.

Because the wildly successful, bust-through-your-goals, raise-the-money-of-your dreams kind of
fundraising starts with your Board of Directors.

Your board members are the leaders of your organization. So if the leaders of your organization won’t help or won’t give money themselves, how do you expect anyone else in the community to do so?

All is not lost. Ready for some good news?

    It’s all fixable.

You CAN have a Board that understands and fulfills their role
You CAN have Board members who are willing to say “yes” and step into action like making a leadership-sized gift and asking others to give
You CAN have a Board that takes on responsibility for finding ideal new Board members
You CAN have a Board that enforces its own rules, handles attendance issues, and gets rid of ‘dead wood’ members
You CAN have a Board full of Ambassadors for your organization, who are out telling the story in the community and setting hearts on fire for your mission
You CAN have a Board meeting that’s short and powerful, with everyone participating
You CAN have Board members who ask “How can I help you?” instead of avoiding your calls

    Ready for the solution?

    Meet Your Trainer, Sandy Rees

Three things you should know about me:
    sandy and sadie
First, I have the unique experience of the the Board Trifecta – I’ve been the clueless Board member, I’ve been the frustrated staff person, and now I’m the perceptive Board trainer. I’ve seen Boards from all sides, and I know what most Board members want from their experience. The bottom line – I understand what they want and what you want, and how to get you all on the same page.

Second, I believe it’s critical for your Board to understand their job and to be willing to do it well. So I lay it all out for them in training, in a firm way, and show them that if they are serious about helping your nonprofit reach its goals, they need to get on board.

Third, I hate boring trainings! I’ve sat through way too many of them where I’ve lost the feeling in my booty as well as my brain. So I make my trainings FUN! I study adult learning styles, and infuse a LOT of games and interaction into my trainings. As a result, someone ALWAYS says to me “I can’t believe how fast the time flew by!”

Who this training kit is for:

    • Small nonprofits that can’t afford an expensive consultant to deliver a one-day training
    • Organizations with lifeless Boards, attendance problems, long boring meetings, micro-managers, or other problems that need to be fixed FAST
    • Any nonprofit that wants to build a full Board of engaged, supportive members who aren’t afraid of fundraising

    Who it’s NOT for:

    • Boards full of experienced Board members, who know how things work
    • Boards that think they’re doing fine and don’t need training
    • Boards that aren’t willing to set aside time to work through the materials
    • Boards that aren’t willing to change
    • Boards that don’t care about making a difference in the community and are good with the status quo
    • Boards that are looking for a magic pill to fix all their problems right now without doing the work it takes for long-term results
    • Boards where people would rather complain about a problem that do something to fix it

Here’s what you’ll get in Board Training in a Box:

    • 2 DVDs of training videos covering everything your Board members need to know, so they walk away with a complete understanding of their role
    • 10 Participant workbooks – every member of your Board can have their own reference materials to take notes in and refer back to, anytime they need it
    • Facilitator’s guide – anyone can serve as the Facilitator – just follow the simple directions to start and stop the video, manage group discussions, and stay on track
    • Toys AND tools (to make your training fun!)

You can literally just add water and experience a total transformation for your Board!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: My nonprofit is fairly new. Will this work for me?
A: Absolutely! Everything you’ll learn in Board Training in a Box applies to nonprofits at all stages of their development. Basic Board roles don’t change.

Q: We don’t have many Board members. Should we wait until we get more?
A: There’s a big section on recruiting new members in the training that could be really valuable to you as you bring on new folks. I’d recommend you go ahead and get it so you can take advantage of that piece, then have your new folks go through it once they’re on board.

Q: I’ve got several problem Board members who seem to have their own agenda. Will them help them ‘get with the program’ of what we’re trying to accomplish?
A: When Board members don’t understand their role, they can easy get caught up in micromanaging or pushing their own agenda. A little education can go a long way – most people do the right thing when they know what the right thing is. In my experience, most problems ease up or go away after training.

Q: My Board is very hands off – they expect the staff to do all the work. Will this help them see they need pull their own weight?
A: It should. There’s a whole section on staff vs Board roles that explains who does what. This section alone could be worth the cost of the program for you.

Q: I’ve got several founding Board members. Some of them have been on the Board for over 20 years, and they think everything is fine. What will this program do for them?
A: There’s a good bit of inspirational material in this program and when coupled with the exercises, can help reignite the group’s passion for the mission. At a minimum, you’ll have an opportunity to talk about term limits!

I can’t say enough about your diplomatic, yet insightful way of getting input and contributions from everyone in the group! It was a fun day that actually went by too quickly. The experience certainly gave us a great foundation of knowledge and I believe will motivate my Board toward a bigger, stronger vision and passion for Habitat for Humanity. This training was easily worth ten-fold the cost! Only time will tell, but I expect our Board to have an increase in energy, insight, and purpose over the months to come!”

“My Board left the training energized and motivated, but most importantly they had a plan!

Your training was outstanding and right on target. You offered up the exact fundraising tools we needed to help us educate our donors and most importantly how to ASK our donors for their support.

I am so happy that we made the decision to work with you. You have been a valuable asset to our organization and your positive attitude and uplifting support is a real motivator to all of us.”

“This is a must-have tool for Board development.”

Our Board was fortunate to have Sandy lead our hands-on training, so I know how good she is. I’m excited that her training is now available at a great price for any nonprofit organization through Board Training in a Box. The lessons are easy and the results are lasting. Now our Board members understand their role and they find that fundraising is not the daunting task they once thought it was. Try it out and see what Sandy’s ideas can do to take your Board to the next level.”

    “My Board surpassed their goal!”

“I had Sandy come out and do a Board Magic workshop for my Board. I ha the same problem that most nonprofits have – lack of Board initiative, especially around fundraising. I’ve seen several Board trainings before, but not like Sandy’s. She made it fun and personable, and before we knew it, my Board took over the conversation. They expressed what made them uncomfortable about fundraising and began brainstorming new ideas. It’s like the lights came on!  After the training, my Board not only met the fundraising goal I set for them of $6,500, but they exceeded it by $2,000! I attribute their success to Sandy’s training.”

    “Sandy was born for this.

She is born to be a trainer, as we know some people just aren’t cut out for that. But Sandy is great! I’ve had the good fortune of using Sandy several times to lead training for our Board. The feedback is always positive from those attending and there’s no doubt she understands the nonprofit industry! We always walk away from her sessions with great material and ideas to put to work immediately.

And as an ED, I have to say how great it is to have a trainer who is on the same page with me. I may know the information I want to teach; however, it takes that third party to really cut through the clutter and make an impact with our volunteers…and Sandy is the perfect choice!”

“We’re now raising more than 8 times the money”

We’ve worked with Sandy for almost 10 years and during that time, we’ve seen some significant growth. Thanks in part to her teaching, we have gone from an organization serving 2 clients with a dozen volunteers and a budget of $15,000, to serving more than 30 women with 75 volunteers and a budget of $125,000. Small nonprofits often fail to recognize the importance of equipping their Board members with the tools they need to establish and grow their organization. Board Training in a Box is an affordable way to get this work done!”

“She didn’t just tell us what to do, she showed us how.

Last year, I realized how complacent my board had become and I knew I needed to do something about it and fast! They used the same excuses every year about why they couldn’t raise more than $10,000 for our major event. They relied on me as the Director to do all the fundraising. All the other local programs in our county were growing and we were standing still. But then Sandy led a training for us and everything changed. Sandy didn’t just tell us what to do, she showed us how. She gave us tried and tested concepts on Board governance, recruitment, and fundraising. And she showed us what was possible for a program our size in every area of nonprofit management. We are one week away from our major event and have already netted what we grossed last year for the whole event. Thanks Sandy…. We will be calling you again.”

“Sandy’s Board Magic workshop was a great way to start the new year!  It was a real eye-opener for many of our board members, and even the most experienced members learned new things.  Everyone agreed it was four hours well spent”.

“We are now using a consent agenda for our board meetings, which gives us to more time to discuss the clinic’s future.  We have formed a governance committee, and that committee is working on goals and an evaluation process for our board.  And we have other plans in the works–all thanks to Sandy and her workshop.”
